Jose Fernandez

Director - Orlando Youth Flute Choir


Jose Fernandez is a native of Miami, Florida where he picked up the flute at the age of 10 and attended New World School for the Arts. Choosing Florida State University for his Bachelor in Music Education, he studied the flute under Eva Amsler Professor of Flute, and Conducting under Dr. Patrick Dunnigan and Dr. Alexander Jimenez. During his time at FSU, he was a member of the Wind Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra, he was also a member of the FSU Flute Choir and Baroque Flute Ensemble. Participant in masterclasses led by Eva Amsler, Karl-Heinz Shutz, Ian Clarke, and Dr. Amy Porter.

Upon graduating from FSU in 2009, Mr. Fernandez started his teaching career with Orange County Public Schools and accepted the position of Director of Bands and Orchestras at Westridge Middle School in Orlando Florida. During his time at Westridge, Mr. Fernandez led the groups to Superior rated performances at district Music Performance Assessments. In 2014, he accepted the Director of Bands position at Oak Ridge High School, where he continued the tradition of excellence in the marching and concert band seasons. He is currently the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Innovation Middle School. He is also a Woodwind Instructor for Cypress Creek High School’s Marching Band. 

Mr. Fernandez is passionate about sharing his love for the arts in his community. He is involved with Central Florida Community Arts in multiple facets. He is a Director of the CFCArts Youth Orchestra and is the Flute Section Leader of the CFCArts Symphony Orchestra. Through CFCArts, he has performed in numerous concerts and events in Orlando, including Creative City Project, The Orlando Ballet, most recently in the World Premiere of Arcadian Broad’s Wonderland: Mad Tales of the Hatter. He has also recorded music for the Orlando Ballet, led by composer Julian Bond and Florida State University’s former composition student, Doron Kima. Mr. Fernandez is excited to join the OYCE Flute Choir.
